GER strengthens SBC ties in Guatemala

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (BP)--Noteworthy returns for the Great Commission more than justify the efforts and energies of the Southern Baptist Convention's Global Evangelical Relations initiative, as Garry Eudy sees it.
Eudy, a retired International Mission Board worker and pastor, believes the results from GER strategist Bobby Welch's efforts in Guatemala over the last three years clearly demonstrate GER's Great Commission value.
Eudy said Welch's presence and his efforts in linking Southern Baptists to ministry in the country have strengthened relationships with the Convention of Baptist Churches in Guatemala and opened the door for more Southern Baptists to join and support their efforts to present the Gospel to every person in the Central American nation.

Soccer: Guatemala hold off Honduras to claim 0-0 Gold Cup draw

(Reuters) – Guatemala held off Honduras to grab a 0-0 draw in their Gold Cup Group B opener despite finishing the game with nine men.
Defenders Gustavo Cabrera, in the 61 minute, and Henry Medina, in the 78th, were sent off but still Guatemala managed to deny their Central American rivals all three points during a spirited and physical match that went against the early Gold Cup trend of one-sided contests.
Goalkeeper Ricardo Jerez, who needed treatment on multiple occasions in the second half, kept his Guatemala defense organized but had to withstand some heavy Honduras pressure in the final minutes to secure the point.
“This tie feels like a win,” Jerez told reporters after he was named man-of-the-match....
Honduras held by nine-man Guatemala | The Soccer Room
LOS ANGELES, Cal. – Guatemala failed to put a shot on goal yet still snared a point from Honduras.
Guatemala played with nine men in the final 11 minutes, but managed to tie Honduras 0-0 on Monday night in the second game of a Group B doubleheader at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
When the game was over, Guatemala’s fans celebrated as if their team had won.
Honduras played in the World Cup last year for the first time since 1982. Five members of that team started against Guatemala.
”We did a job, that’s for sure,” Guatemala coach Ever Hugo Almeida said. ”We wanted to recover the grit, the discipline and the desire not to lose.”
After the first group games, Jamaica holds first place with three points and a goal differential of plus-4 following its 4-0 victory over Grenada earlier Monday. Guatemala and Honduras are tied for second with one point.
